Remove pop-up ads in Google Chrome

Now the bulk of advertising is moving to the online format – and this is quite logical, because people are spending more and more time online. And if it seems to you that your favorite Chrome is filled with annoying advertising, which is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore – this is a signal that it's time to take action.

There are two main ways to disable advertising – through browser settings, as well as with the help of special blocker programs. They are free and are in the public domain, their installation takes only a couple of minutes – and you will get rid of a significant amount of annoying advertising.

Where does the pop-up advertising in Google Chrome come from?

Pop-up advertising in Google Chrome is one of the most popular promotion tools, although its effectiveness is very doubtful. Yes, it is noticed by all users, but a very small percentage of the audience uses the products and offers offered.

The reason is very simple – it is this type of promotion that is the most annoying and annoying, which is confirmed by repeated studies.

And when the user is irritated, his negativity spreads from advertising to the product itself. As a result, a situation arises in which everyone views ads, but no one likes this product.

And many sellers still don't want to accept the fact that aggressive promotion doesn't work. And sometimes it works even in the opposite direction – a potential buyer has not yet tried the product, but already has a prejudice against it because of such intrusive marketing.

Now users are so accustomed to pop-up advertising that they almost stopped noticing it. Most already just automatically close all pop-up windows. Among these proposals may well be useful and necessary, but no one wants to understand this. Such satiety has led to the fact that pop-ups have become almost useless.

Google Chrome has already tracked this trend, it blocks pop-up ads that it considers useless, annoying, unreliable.

Those messages that do leak through Google's algorithms are blocked manually by users. This can be done in several ways – and you will get rid of pop-up ads forever.

Turn off ads in Google Chrome settings

In order to block pop-up ads in Google Chrome through the settings, you need to follow these steps:

  • Open the browser;
  • At the top right, we see the stirrup icon with vertically arranged points, click on it
  • In the menu that opens, select Settings;
  • Here, in the menu on the left, select the Privacy and Security section, go to it and select the Site Settings line.

Here we are interested in the sections "Notifications", "Pop-ups and redirects", and "Advertising" – it is hidden under the tab "Advanced content settings".

Ad blocking extensions

Installing special blocker programs helps to radically get rid of all advertising, including pop-up windows.

The general algorithm for their installation is approximately the same:

  • Going to the Chrome Web Store: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/extensions?hl=ru
  • In the search bar for the store, we write the name of the extension or keywords (for example, an ad blocker).
  • Select the extension you like and click "Install".

The process of finding and installing a blocker takes a couple of minutes – and you will be spared from annoying messages in the coming months.

Adblock Plus

A very popular tool with which you can remove not only pop-up, but also other ads in Chrome. The advantages of the extension are that it is easy and convenient, with a minimalistic intuitive interface in the form of a drop-down menu. The extension can be used with default settings – while the user receives an additional set of options.

Adblock Plus blocks all elements that fall under the definition of intrusive advertising – shocking banners, pop-ups, etc.

In addition, the application suppresses tracking attempts, generates a whitelist of sites, selectively hides advertising elements on suspicious resources, and also allows you to configure filters manually.

Adblock

The AdBlock extension is a free program, one of the most popular. Standard functionality provides basic protection against most known threats.

AdBlock is better than nothing, but if you want to get the highest quality protection, you should use Adblock Plus or try other extensions.

Ghostery

Ghostery is a free extension that allows you to remove ads in Google Chrome and has an anti-tracking function.

This extension searches for and blocks social buttons. Networks. In addition, it provides tools for analyzing user behavior, various widgets.

AdGuard AdBlocker

AdGuard – this ad blocker is considered one of the most reliable. Its installation allows you to remove about 80% of advertising – this is an excellent indicator.

The program is installed very easily, and if desired, AdGuard user can create his own rules. However, for this he needs to know the basics of HTML and CSS.

AdBlocker Ultimate

AdBlocker Ultimate is a simple plug-in with the optimal set of settings. It works on the basis of preset filters.

The expansion policy for advertising is more stringent than that of its counterparts – AdBlocker Ultimate blocks even acceptable ads.

Of the additional options, we can note the support of a whitelist of sites and custom filters, as well as integration into the context menu of Chrome, which simplifies the blocking of individual elements on a specific page.

Using antivirus software

If you do not have an antivirus, be sure to install it. Now there are some great programs that can be installed for free – for example, Avast Free Antivirus.

You can scan your computer with the Dr.Web CureIt healing utility – it is free and does not require installation, but it is not a replacement for a real anti-virus. Doctor Web is good at detecting threats, but it cannot scan the system on a schedule and does not have firewall functions. It must be run manually.

In any case, you can not neglect the antivirus – this will only exacerbate the problem.

Remove ads in the lower-right corner of your browser

Even if you turn off a pop-up ad, it can suddenly appear at the bottom right. This is a separate type of message that refers to notifications.

Where does this kind of advertising come from? For example, you went to a new site that you found interesting. And you see a small window at the top of the screen where you are asked to allow or disable the display of notifications.  You like the site, and at the moment it may seem that notifications from it will be useful – as a result, you allow it to show notifications.

As a result, it may turn out that the site sends notifications several times a day, and all of them are displayed in the lower right corner of the desktop. This is very annoying and you will quickly want to get rid of such alerts. And if there are several such sites, notifications will come even more often, distracting you – and this is even more annoying.

The problem is that it takes a fraction of a second to connect all this, and a few minutes to disconnect. And it always seems to you that you can turn everything off later, there is always no time.

Here it is important to understand that these notifications steal time from you, distract from the main tasks. To stop this waste of resources, just set aside half an hour to clean the browser – and you will be grateful to yourself for such a decision.

Remove the ads in the lower right part of the screen:

  • Open Google Chrome;
  • Click the button with three dots at the top right:
  • Go to Settings;
  • Next, go to Privacy and Security;
  • Here we open the Site Settings;
  • Go to the Notifications item.

Here we set all toggle switches in an inactive position – after that, new sites will not be able to request permissions.

In order to stop sending ads from sites that have already been given permission earlier, you need to find the "Allow" list (at the bottom of the section) and delete resources from there that you are no longer interested in.
